Dr. Wandzel performs some surgeries in the operating room in the Highland, Michigan office. Office surgeries are limited to patients who are considered low medical risk.
Some examples of surgeries that can be done in the office include:
Balloon sinus dilation is a new, minimally invasive office procedure that reopens the sinus pathways and restores drainage to deliver immediate and long lasting relief to recurrent and chronic sinusitis sufferers. In balloon sinus dilation, Dr.Wandzel will reshape the anatomy by inflating small balloons in key places in the nose and sinus to expand sinus pathways and restore drainage. This is a surgery often used to correct a "deviated nasal septum" or "septal spur." Dr. Wandzel straightens the nasal septum (the thin wall of cartilage between your nostrils) and trims the turbinates or "air fins" of soft tissue inside your nose. This allows more air to pass through your nose easily.
Dr. Wandzel can easily remove and biopsy a variety of undesirable or worrisome skin lesions, such as abnormal moles.
When earrings have torn the ear lobe, Dr. Wandzel can repair the ear lobe, let it heal, and re-pierce the ear again if the patient desires.
When adults experience chronic ear infections or fluid in the middle ear, tubes may be a treatment option. Dr. Wandzel can numb the ear in the office and place the tube during a short visit.
Repair of a hole in the eardrum.
When the uvula is enlarged, it can cause snoring and/or contribute to sleep apnea. If you choose to have this procedure done in the office instead of the hospital, Dr. Wandzel can remove it quickly under local anesthesia. The goal of uvulectomy is to minimize the obstruction in the airway and improve the quality of sleep.

All ears-nose-throat surgeries Dr. Wandzel performs in the hospital are typically outpatient stays, with the patient returning home later the same day. Both hospitals serve pediatric patients.
A small tube is inserted into the eardrum to relieve pressure and accumulated fluid.
A small flap of skin or a small piece of tape is used to patch a persistent hole on the eardrum.
Surgical treatment of chronic infection in the mastoid bone (the bone behind the ear).
A minimally invasive outpatient surgery that is proven to help treat chronc sinusitis. The procedure can be done as an office procedure and is an alternative to prescription medication that fail to treat chronic sinusitis. The procedure does not require any cutting or removing of bone or tissues within the sinus cavity. A small, flexible balloon catheter is inserted into the sinus' to dialate the blocked sinus cavity to aid in drainage, and open the sinus' for sinus relief. An opening is enlarged/created from inside the nose into the maxillary (cheek) sinus. This prevents pockets of infection from accumulating inside the sinus.
Chronically inflamed or infected areas of the ethmoid sinus (sinus between your eyes, at the top of your nose) are reduced or eliminated to prevent recurrent sinus infections.
